Micah 6:8 And what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
If we were to create a list of the "Ten Most Famous Men in the Bible," Enoch would not have much of a chance to make the list. There are less than ten verses in the whole Bible that even deal with him or anything about his life. However, Enoch stands out because it is twice said in Scripture, "Enoch walked with God" (Gen. 5:22, 24). Little is said about sermons he preached, songs he composed, or miracles he performed, and yet God wanted us to know that his walk with God was good.
It is interesting that the word walk has such significance in the Bible. We are never told to sprint, or run, or even jog with God. Why? Because most of us could never do it for the long haul of life.
Suppose I wanted to get from Philadelphia to Chicago on foot. Could I sprint? No way! Could I run? Not a chance! Could I jog? Probably not! Could I walk? Actually, most likely I probably could. Oh yes, it would take time, and at times it would be a slow process of "one step at a time," but it would be possible. Though walking might not be spectacular or sensational, it is possible to cover a lot of territory over an extended period of time. I think this is why God chose this unique term. The Christian experience is not a dash, or even a marathon for that matter. It is a lifetime of staying in step with God.
As one step of obedience is taken, the next step appears before us. The progress may seem slow, but progress is not measured in time, it is measured in distance.
